An Interview with Dr. Phi Luong—Our new Pediatric Dentist

December 19th, 2014

Here at Walkow Orthodontics we are so excited to announce the addition of our new pediatric dentist, Dr. Phi Luong, to the team this month! We thought our patients would want to get to know her a little better, so take a minute to read below!

Q:  Welcome Dr. Phi! Let’s start with the basics.  What made you want to become a Pediatric Dentist?

A:  Thanks, Lauren! I personally loved going to the dentist when I was a young girl, even though I had a sweet tooth and more than my fair share of cavities.   I think it’s wonderful that I get to develop a life-long relationship of trust with my patients at such an early age.

Q: What is your favorite part about working with children?

A:  Favorite? It’s hard to pick just one–they keep us young, they’re fun, they are simply a joy to work with.  It’s also a great excuse to watch the latest Disney movies at work.

Q:  Where did you go to school, and where did you work prior to this?

A:  I attended UC San Francisco dental school and then completed residency at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia.  I practiced as an associate pediatric dentist in Philly before moving back home to Orange County.

Q: Now onto some silly questions…If you could be a superhero, who would you be and why?

A:  Wonder Woman. She has super strength, super speed, super senses, and she accessorizes with indestructible bracelets and a tiara!

Q:  If your life had a theme song, what would it be and why?

A:  “Good Life” by OneRepublic.  I don’t take all of the lyrics literally, but the overall tone and message of the song is uplifting, positive and looks toward the future. I’ve been fortunate to have the experiences I have had and to have developed relationships with the people whom I have come across–“I have so much to feel good about.”

Q: Do you have any New Year’s Resolutions for 2015?

A: To provide quality and personable pediatric dental care at Walkow Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry =)

We are so honored to have Dr. Phi here, and we look forward to her serving your pediatric dental needs. Please call our office to schedule an appointment to see Dr. Phi for an Initial consultation. Happy 2015!

Exciting New Additions to the Walkow Orthodontics Team!

October 22nd, 2014

Dear Patients and Parents –

I hope you have had a healthy, safe, and fun summer and are settling comfortably into the fall as we quickly approach the holiday season. At Walkow Orthodontics, we’ve been  busy with some exciting changes and additions that we are eager to share with you.

In our commitment to providing the highest level of orthodontic care, Dr. Manfred and I are now advancing our oral health initiatives to provide even more comprehensive dental services.  Our first step was welcoming a talented oral surgeon, Dr. Tim Silegy, to our team.  Dr. Silegy joined the practice in July, and will be available to our patients for any surgical procedure that is necessary as a part of the orthodontic treatment.

Then, in September, my personal hygienist, Nancy Chou, joined our team.  Nancy is now available for cleanings as needed during orthodontic treatment, giving our patients the added convenience and benefit of being able to remove the arch wire in braces and provide the most thorough cleaning.  Nancy will also be working with our patients on detailed home care instruction, assuring that our patients have the very best hygiene possible. Improved hygiene naturally leads to improved orthodontic results, and we are pleased to offer this service in house.

Finally, in December, we will be welcoming Dr. Phi Luong, a highly qualified and talented pediatric dentist, to the practice.  Dr. Phi Luong received her dental degree from UCSF and pediatric training from St. Christopher’s for Children, a highly regarded program in Philadelphia.  Dr. Luong has extensive knowledge in children’s care including special needs, and advanced restorative dentistry. She is looking forward to returning to her home in Orange County and joining our team.

All of our new team members were personally selected by me and Dr. Manfred after many months of interviewing and due diligence to bring you the finest quality of care. The advantages of having them as members of our practice are many, enabling us to have enhanced communication and collaboration of orthodontic and overall dental care. We are proud to offer a cascade of dental services in one convenient location.  You can review all of their bios on our website, www.walkowortho.com.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.  I look forward to sharing my enthusiasm about these developments with you.

Best regards,

Todd M Walkow, DMD, MS

Walkow Orthodontics welcomes Nancy Chou, dental hygienist to the team!

September 9th, 2014

Here at Walkow Orthodontics, we understand that orthodontic treatment can put a wrench into your own oral hygiene routine. Keeping your teeth and gums clean while wearing braces can be a difficult and time-consuming task.  While we recommend seeing your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and exam, it is also smart to consider having additional cleanings while in orthodontic treatment.

In order to serve our patients better, we would like to introduce the newest member to the Walkow Ortho team, Ms Nancy Chou, registered dental hygienist!

Nancy was born in Taipei, Taiwan but became a Texan before the age of 2. She was raised in Dallas, TX and received her Bachelors of Science in Dental Hygiene from The University of Texas at Houston in 2007. Shortly after graduation, she decided that she wanted to trade in her cowboy boots for flip flops, so she packed a trunk-full of belongings, gathered her little heartbeat at her feet-her shih-tzu/ terrier puppy, Ollie-and landed in sunny Southern California.  She enjoys traveling, hiking, camping, rock climbing, playing video games, and has recently started admitting that she enjoys competing in sprint triathlons. She also runs an organization, Ollie Diggs, which raises funds for animal rescues in the Southern California area, a cause that is near and dear to her heart. Nancy prides herself in giving the highest quality of care to her patients by providing a thorough but gentle cleaning. Her goal is to not only leave your smile looking and feeling great, but to also ensure that you have the confidence and knowledge of how to keep your teeth healthy for many years to come!  Fun factoid: Nancy keeps at least 8 travel packs of floss in her purse at all times.

Next time you are in the office, please inquire about scheduling your next cleaning with Nancy at the same time you are getting a braces adjustment. The convenience of having the wires removed, your teeth thoroughly cleaned, and then your adjustment performed all in the same hour can’t be beat!  We look forward to seeing you!

Wisdom Teeth: The Last Step in your Orthodontic Treatment

August 26th, 2014

Your braces may be off, but at Walkow Orthodontics, we still care about your smile and want you to keep flashing those perfectly aligned pearly whites for years to come.  In addition to wearing your retainers, it is important for you to be evaluated for wisdom tooth removal prior to moving on.

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last teeth of the human dentition to develop.  They can enter the mouth as early as 14 but typically don’t erupt until your late teens.  As our diets have become softer and more refined, our jaws have become smaller in size and there may not be sufficient room for your wisdom teeth without causing your other teeth to shift.  In severe cases, wisdom teeth may get stuck (impacted) between your jaw bone and teeth, causing pain, infection, cavities, cysts, and in severe cases, tumors.

The cases below illustrate the perils of delayed treatment:

38 year-old with pain in the lower corners of the jaw due to tipped wisdom teeth.

72 year-old with a large cyst associated with the wisdom tooth in lower left-hand corner and gross decay in the wisdom tooth in lower right-hand corner.

Dr. Tim Silegy, our oral surgeon at Walkow Orthodontics, has removed thousands of wisdom teeth in his 20 years as an oral surgeon.  Collectively, we are committed to providing you with the best care possible.  We look forward to discussing your care with you in the near future.

Oral Surgeon, Dr. Tim Silegy, joins the Walkow Orthodontic team!

July 8th, 2014

We have exciting news to share here at Walkow Orthodontics. We would like to welcome Dr. Tim Silegy, board certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, to our wonderful team here at Walkow Ortho.   From wisdom teeth removal to impacted tooth exposures, Dr. Silegy will offer the highest level of surgical expertise and treatment to our patients.  This exciting partnership will allow our patients greater continuity of care, enhanced communication between specialists, and of course, the ease of having all procedures performed under one roof!  Dr. Silegy and his staff will be available at our Newport Beach office for all your surgical needs.

Dr. Silegy is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He graduated Cum Laude from Graceland College and received his doctorate from the University of Colorado School of Dentistry.  Dr. Silegy completed a four-year residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the King/Drew Medical Center in Los Angeles. He returned to Colorado shortly thereafter, where, in addition to private practice, he was on the faculty of the University of Colorado as an Assistant Clinical Professor. The allure of the ocean and the warm Southern California weather prompted him to relocate permanently in 1999.

Dr. Silegy has published articles in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Journal of the California Dental Association and teaches continuing education courses to physicians, dentists, nurses, hygienists, and auxiliaries throughout the world. In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr Silegy has traveled to Latin America on several medical missions to help the impoverished. He was also the featured oral and maxillofacial surgeon on ABC’s hit television program Extreme Makeover.

Seeing is Believing: Giving our Patients a New Perspective

May 28th, 2014

Have you ever wondered if straightening your teeth with Invisalign will provide you with the beautifully aligned smile you’ve always dreamt of?

At Walkow Orthodontics, we are excited to offer a new technology to our patients–the Invisalign Outcome Simulator.  The Outcome Simulator creates a customized potential outcome that helps patients visualize the aesthetic, functional, and health benefits of straighter teeth with Invisalign.  The Simulator is a computer application that allows our patients to view their own virtual Invisalign treatment plan.  The Simulator’s unique dual view layout shows an image of your current dentition next to a simulated final position of how your teeth may look after Invisalign treatment.

Here’s how it works: We use the Itero digital scanner to take an 8-10 minute scan of your mouth. After the Itero scanner captures the digital, impression-free images of your teeth, within minutes it produces an accurate 3-D image right on our computer screen. The software then moves the teeth to an ideal position, and generates a new 3-D image displaying how your teeth will look when treatment is complete—giving you a visual representation of your future beautiful smile!

We are happy to offer the Outcome Simulator to any prospective patient! Visit our website at www.walkowortho.com.

Faster Orthodontic Treatment…Let’s Pick up the Pace!

March 5th, 2014

As you could probably guess, the most common question we are asked at Walkow Orthodontics is “How long will my treatment take?” Fortunately, thanks to advances in technology, your treatment can now be completed more quickly than ever before. We are proud to offer a new product that can help your smile finish even faster, called Acceledent.  Acceledent is a device that sends micropulses of a certain frequency to the bones surrounding your teeth. The result is increased bone remodeling and faster tooth movement!  Acceledent can be worn over braces or with Invisalign and research has shown up to a 50% reduction in overall treatment time!  The device is quite comfortable, and needs to be worn only 20 minutes a day.  It can be worn while watching TV, working on the computer, reading, or doing many other tasks. It is hands-free so it will have minimal interference with your daily routine.  Of course, your smile always finishes as rapidly as possible when your orthodontist’s instructions are carefully followed–including maintaining good oral hygiene, taking proper care of your braces or Invisalign, and wearing elastics when prescribed.

It is our commitment to you to provide the best technology and treatment available to give you the results you want–faster! We believe everyone deserves a great smile in a timely manner. Ask our orthodontists, Dr. Walkow and Dr. Manfred, whether Acceledent is the right choice for you!

More information about Acceledent can be found at www.acceledent.com.

The Advantages of Invisalign Teen

February 11th, 2014

Many teenagers want to improve their smile without the pain and embarrassment of having to wear metal braces.  Just like metal braces, Invisalign works by applying a gentle force to slowly move teeth into position.  Metal braces are glued to the teeth, however, and need to be adjusted  regularly by Dr. Walkow and Dr. Manfred in order to move the teeth into proper position.

Invisalign uses a series of clear plastic trays to move teeth.  When you are done with one tray (usually after 14 consecutive days), you simply pop in the next!  Invisalign Teen straightens teeth just as well as traditional metal braces, but has several advantages.

INVISIBLE

You have probably figured out the most obvious advantage already: the aligners are nearly invisible!   Invisalign works by using a series of clear aligners that should be worn 22 hours a day.  Invisalign trays are almost undetectable when you wear them, so you can smile with confidence—even while you are straightening your teeth!

REMOVABLE

One of the best things about Invisalign Teen is that the trays are removable.  This means you can remove your tray to eat, brush, and floss your teeth, or even to play sports.  While Dr. Walkow and Dr. Manfred and our team at Walkow Orthodontics require you to wear the trays for most of the day, having the ability to remove your trays means you have practically none of the dietary restrictions that metal brace wearers have to observe.

Teens that play contact sports often experience difficulties with metal braces.  Invisalign Teen allows the flexibility to wear a mouthguard, and no metal wires or brackets means less risk of cuts or other injuries while playing a game.  Musicians also benefit from being able to remove their trays during rehearsals and performances.  You can even remove your tray for your school picture or to snap a quick selfie! J

Finally, because you can remove your aligners, you can easily keep your teeth clean through normal brushing and flossing.  You can also clean your trays by brushing and rinsing them in warm water.  Brushing and flossing with metal braces can be frustrating and time-consuming.  Invisalign Teen treatment at Walkow Orthodontics helps you keep your smile white and shiny with very little change to your normal routine.

To learn more about Invisalign Teen, or to schedule an appointment with Dr. Walkow and Dr. Manfred, please give us a call at any of our 3 convenient offices in Newport Beach, Irvine, or Aliso Viejo!

Bullying Linked to Dental Characteristics

January 15th, 2014

A recent study published in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics looked at the contribution of physical features to the experience of bullying in a sample of schoolchildren in Amman, Jordan.  A sample of 920 sixth-grade students (11-12 years of age) were asked to complete questionnaires that asked about their experience with bullying, being bullied, and characteristics that led to the bullying incidents.

The study found that bullying was reported by 47% of the sample.  More boys reported being bullied than girls.  A greater proportion of victims reported staying home from school and strongly disliking school than those who were not bullied.  Interestingly, TEETH were the number ONE feature targeted for bullying, followed by strength and weight.  The 3 most commonly reported dental features targeted by bullies were: spacing between the teeth or missing teeth, shape or color of the teeth, and prominent front teeth.

Each day more than 160,000 U.S. children stay home from school because they fear being bullied. We at Walkow Orthodontics want to take a strong stance in the anti-bullying movement. No child deserves to be bullied EVER.  If any of this information strikes a chord with you or your child, please allow us to help by scheduling a consultation today.

Concerned parents and children can learn more about bullying prevention by visiting the website below.  We encourage everyone to “Be More Than a Bystander to Bullying.”
